Parvo Puppies – Help Needed

On January 22, seven puppies were brought in to a Vet clinic and diagnosed with Parvo. Treatment for Parvo is very expensive, and the owner could not afford it, so he asked instead that they be euthanized. The clinic staff asked if he would be willing to surrender the puppies to a rescue instead, and he agreed. 4 Luv of Dog Rescue has accepted these puppies and is providing for their care. We believe these puppies deserve a chance to pull through. The treatment for seven puppies will cost approximately $5000. Please help us to help these dogs by making a tax deductible donation. Thank you!

1/23  UPDATE on the Parvo Pups: They all survived the night, but 2 of the females are still down and out. So it is touch and go with them.

If you would like to call in to the Vet Clinic and make a donation directly, please email info@4luvofdog.org for information.

We also have a PayPal link on the homepage of our website (Please note “Parvo”).
or you can drop off or mail a donation to:

Thank You to the Greg Biffle Foundation for the $3000 Grant

4 Luv of Dog Rescue has been awarded a $3000 grant by the Greg Biffle Foundation. The grant money will be used to help with veterinary expenses incurred for dogs that have been rescued from area pounds or surrendered by their owners. The Greg Biffle Foundation for Animals was founded in 2005, by Greg and Nicole Biffle, to create awareness and serve as an advocate to improve the well-being of animals by engaging the power and passion of the motorsports industry. The foundation donates to humane societies, no-kill animal shelters, and spay/neuter clinics.

4 Luv of Dog Rescue has also been awarded an $891 grant by the PEDIGREE Foundation.  4 Luv of Dog Rescue shares the belief of the PEDIGREE Foundation that every dog deserves a loving home.

The grant money will be used to help cover costs associated with providing care for dogs in foster care and boarding. Some of the expenses incurred are for veterinary care, boarding, food, treats, kennels, beds, blankets, leashes, collars, toys, bowls, brushes, grooming, etc.

Urgent Plea for Foster Homes!

Foster homes are the most important part of our rescue. Every week there are dogs in need of rescue in local and regional pounds. Without people willing to open their hearts and homes and offering to care for these dogs, we can not help rescue these homeless dogs.  Foster homes provide the love and shelter while 4 Luv of Dog Rescue provides and pays for all necessities (food, kennel, medical care, etc.).

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough foster homes for all the dogs we have accepted into our rescue.  These dogs currently are staying at local boarding facilities or with temporary foster homes.

Please consider providing one of them a foster or forever home and apply to become a foster home.

If you can’t foster but still want to help, please make a donation towards our boarding expenses.

Pit Bull Myths

Below are five of the most common pit bull MYTHS.

1. They have locking jaws.

This is probably the most common myth. The anatomy of a pit bull is no different than that of any other dog. They do NOT have locking jaws.

2. They fail temperament testing more than any other dog.

This is not true. Pit bulls pass temperament testing 81.7% of the time. Beagles only pass 78.7% of the time, and Golden Retrievers 81.1% of the time. The American Pit Bull Terrier scored just above the Golden Retriever and just below the Labrador Retriever.

3. They have been bred to be human aggressive.

Pit bulls are not aggressive toward people. They can be taught to be vicious; just as any other dog, but this is not a trait that is inherent in pit bull dogs.

4. Only drug dealers own pit bulls.

This silly myth exists thanks to movies and music videos that feature drug dealers and other criminals as pit bull owners. In the 1970’s Doberman Pinschers were considered the most vicious dog, and were popular with criminals. In the 1980’s it was the Rottweiler. Today it is the Pit Bull. This is a sad, self-fulfilling prophecy that can only change if the American propagandized media accurately portrays pit bulls as the gentle, loyal and loving breed that they are. Facts and temperament tests have proven that pit bulls are some of the greatest choices for a family pet.

Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

*Taken from the ASPCA. http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/pet-care-tips/thanksgiving-safety-tips.aspx

‘Tis the season for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

Check out the following tips from ASPCA experts for a fulfilling Thanksgiving that your pets can enjoy, too.

Talkin’ Turkey
If you decide to feed your pet a little nibble of turkey, make sure it’s boneless and well-cooked. Don’t offer her raw or undercooked turkey, which may contain salmonella bacteria.

Sage Advice
Sage can make your Thanksgiving stuffing taste delish, but it and many other herbs contain essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets if eaten in large quantities. Cats are especially sensitive to the effects of certain essential oils.

No Bread Dough
Don’t spoil your pet’s holiday by giving him raw bread dough. According to ASPCA experts, when raw bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise in his stomach. As it expands, the pet may experience vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating, which could become a life-threatening emergency, requiring surgery.

Don’t Let Them Eat Cake
If you’re baking up Thanksgiving cakes, be sure your pets keep their noses out of the batter, especially if it includes raw eggs—they could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.

Too Much of a Good Thing
A few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a taste of mashed potato or even a lick of pumpkin pie shouldn’t pose a problem. However, don’t allow your pets to overindulge, as they could wind up with a case of stomach upset, diarrhea or even worse—an inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. In fact, it’s best keep pets on their regular diets during the holidays.

A Feast Fit for a Kong
While the humans are chowing down, give your cat and dog their own little feast. Offer them Nylabones or made-for-pet chew bones. Or stuff their usual dinner—perhaps with a few added tidbits of turkey, vegetables (try sweet potato or green beans) and dribbles of gravy—inside a Kong toy. They’ll be happily occupied for awhile, working hard to extract their dinner from the toy.

Top Paw of the Week – Annie

Our Top Paw pick this week is Annie, a sweet girl who is looking for her forever family.  She is playful and friendly.

Her foster family says:

Annie is a very petite girl . She loves people and does well with male dogs, with proper introduction we think she can also do well with female dogs. Annie does well in the car and after getting her energy out she is a pretty good walker on leash. Her pictures don’t do her justice. Annie is a beauty. She deserves a home who will take her for walks, play with her outside and then snuggle in with her for the night. Please consider fostering or adopting Annie. She is a very special dog.

If you’re interested in Annie, please fill out an adoption application.
